Living Waters

As we in Canada take our daily showers, water the lawn or go for a swim in the pool, it's easy to forget that fresh water is a life-or-death issue in many parts of the world.

More than one out of six people lack access to safe drinking water, namely 1.1 billion people, and more than two out of six lack adequate sanitation, namely 2.6 billion people (Estimation for 2002, by the WHO/UNICEF JMP, 2004).

3900 children die every day from water borne diseases (WHO 2004).

About 5 million people die each year from poor drinking water, poor sanitation, or a dirty home environment -- often resulting from water shortage.

The World Health Organization says that at any time, up to half of humanity has one of the six main diseases -- diarrhea, schistosomiasis, or trachoma, or infestation with ascaris, guinea worm, or hookworm -- associated with poor drinking water and inadequate sanitation.

The AMC Living Water Project is about constructing boreholes in parts of East Africa where water is very scarce.

In 2009, AMC completed the construction of a borehole in Turkana, Kenya. The Turkana region of North Western Kenya is situated in the Rift Valley, a desert region with breath taking scenery. The Turkana District is bounded to the north by Sudan, by Uganda to the west, and to the east by Lake Turkana and its volcanic hills. Lake Turkana is the largest desert Lake in the world and is many a tourist’s dream lake. Tragically, the droughts experienced here in the last 7 years due to the harsh weather are turning this beautiful region into a nightmare.

In April 2011, AMC is launched a new funraising program for the construction of another much needed borehole in the Turkana, Region.
